About Open Space Technology for South Asia

"What a truly democratic methodology" was one of the feedbacks received from one participant who came to learn about Open Space Technology (OST) for the first time during an sharing discussion. It is true that OST is more open and democratic in terms of the approaches and processes followed and tools used. But, it is also very true that one form of democracy also does not works perfectly for everyone.

The originator of ST Harrison Owen had said that the funny thing about OST is that it works everywhere. In the beginning as a learner of OST, we had lots of skepticisms if it holds accurate for our context in our ways for South Asia. In this background, it beccame challenging  for us as OST promotes a space for equal participation and encourage leadership to people with commitment and passion for the issue. Whereas, in South Asia, we see that the society is still divided in forms of caste, creed and class. Also, the leadership is driven by power rather than commitment and passion.

Thus, only after some hands of experiences and learning from hosting few OST in South Asian countries, this is an work in progress for sharing our learnings and further understanding what forms and norms of OST works for South Asia. This is an opening space for internalizing and refining OST for our context for our need and from our learnings.
